I bought a set of Russel stainless lines for my old 92 some years ago and I found that the lines were so short that when I raised the car off the ground, all of the lines stretched tight. Unless they have added some length to their hoses, I would avoid them.
Earl's has a very good hose set as does Goodridge. I have run the Earl's hoses on my '87 autocross/track day car with no problems. DRM carries the Goodridge hoses as does Summit Racing and Tire Rack. Expect to pay somewhere around $100-$125.

Sounds to me like you got a deal that WASN'T a deal. Yes, I would go with Goodridge. Those have fit my C4, MB and other vehicles with no issue of length.
I've used goodridge on a c4 and a c5 and putting them on this 94 i'm putting together. I highly recommend them, fit, form, and function. I needed a couple of copper washers and they sent me a complete set of banjo bolts and washers, no questions asked. now that's customer service.
