Default Brake Question

I replaced the brake pads on my 1996 LT4, and the front ones now make a clunking sound as the calipers squeeze against the rotors. I haven't noticed the same thing on the back brakes. Any ideas? Also, how in the world do you check the AC refrigerant level without attaching a pressure gauge? Thanks!

Were the springs on the pads? If not they'll move when applied. As for the AC, you need the gauges.

Hi
The front brake pads need springs to stop the calliper vibrating and rattling, the springs clip on the metal plate on the calliper and press against the bracket the calliper is housed in. The springs are on the side where the locking pin is inserted.
Look at the link and you can see where the springs are, check your old brake pads as some new brake pads do not come with these springs.
Yes the calliper will rattle when driving on rough roads without these springs.

re the a/c charge, there is a sight glass on the liquid hose from condenser to evaporator coil, i believe in front of the water pump somewhere. rev the car to around 1,500 rpm and it should be clear, any bubbles and its short of refrigerant.

Thanks, guys. I think I got the pads at O'Reilley's. I don't remember any sort of spring, other than a backing plate. I'll check it out.

Did you replace the caliper pins and springs with new ones?

Nope. I just replaced the pads. I need to check to see if the springs were attached to the end of the pad--I assume that is the spring that everyone talks about(not a coil, but a small curved metal tab?).

Did you not notice springs attached to the pads you removed?

That's the answer then--now that I see what it is supposed to look like. The old pads didn't have the springs attached either, so I didn't miss them when they weren't on the new pads. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll be shopping for a retaining hardware kit.

Put the retaining springs on. Now the brakes great--smooth and silent.
