Default A few questions...

This is my first Corvette, I traded a vehicle for a 1988 4+3 Black Vette. I have a few questions regarding the exhaust and air management system.

1) I would like to take out the stock exhaust manifolds and replace them with a set of Hedman Headers:

In removing the stock manifolds, I will be losing the AIR and EGR system. My question #1 is:

Can I remove the AIR system but leave the AIR pump installed and not get a Check Engine light?

2) I would like to find a solution to the EGR system coming off the manifold, I know that if I remove the EGR I will throw a Check Engine light, I will also cause the engine to run hotter and create a ping due to detonation. How can I combat that or is there an alternative to purchasing a header with the AIR and EGR ports on it?

My weekend project is to jump out the 2nd gear switch on the transmission and make the transmissions over drive manual instead of CPU controlled as read HERE...

Here is a picture of the Vette I traded for:

#1 No code will set.

#2 Keep EGR if possible. It does not harm performance, and helps get better mileage. You could use headers like these.

I was looking at those, do they make a header with out the AIR ports but still having the EGR port? Although I think I could get some one to simply weld the ports closed (cutting them off flush with the tube).

You could custom order them, or get painted ones and weld the holes shut. I would think they're smog legal or not. You could have someone program EGR out.

I think TPiS can hook you up with headers that have the EGR port but not the AIR tubes. The nice thing about TPiS headers is that they allow you to use all the stock brackets.

Correct me if I am wrong, programming out the EGR will not solve the issue of the engine detonating and causing the ping correct?

I have heard of this ugly rumor, and do not feel it carries much validity. I've been running TPI since 2000 without EGR and do not feel I've got excessive knock counts. Not to mention 1000's of others doing the same. My thoughts are if you can keep it, great, but if you can't program it out.
