Default Bad Starter?

The starter cranks normally when the engine is cold. When hot it tends to crank very slow. I think the starter is the original. I may have fried it with heat from the headers I've been running the last 4 years.

Check the terminals on the battery for high ohm's and especially the chassis to the negative side of the battery. Corrosion and tightness. Hope the starter is good..

If you want help, you shouldn't make folks start with forensics to figure out background on the car in question! (it's a pet peeve of mine, so bear with me - at least you filled out your profile! )

That's a pretty potent mill you are trying to spin over!

As suggested, I'd check the battery and cables. Check battery voltage while cranking, and voltage drop across the cables as well. If you have a known good battery, swap it out and see if it cures the problem. Other than brushes wearing out, those old GM starters are pretty bullet proof.

Battery connections and grounds are all clean and tight. The negative battery terminal has 0.0 ohms resistance to the frame. Haven't checked cranking volts.

When you replace the starter put a heat shield on it. Come to think of it it could be just the solenoid.

I'm thinking the same thing. Any thoughts on a high torque mini starter?

I am in agreement with chaos. It sounds as if the starter has an internal short which is worse with heat but by all means, check the solenoid first.

A mini is a good idea especially with headers but get a good one. I've had a couple go bad long before they should have just because I tried to save a buck.

I put an LT1 starter on mine when it was still a SBC.
