85 needs auto trans - donors??
HI
I picked up an 85 Corvette automatic relatively cheap, but only 1st, 2nd and reverse work. Car is in decent condition otherwise.
Is there such thing as finding a donor car other than a Vette for a used drop in? Or is a Vette tranny specific, or can a donor be modified to fit? ie tailshaft length or?
Just looking at options.....There are ususally decent used refurbished 700R4 tranny's available, but nothing Corvette specific.

Swap on your C4 tailshaft housing ( and speedo gear ) and trim 3/4" off the output shaft of a non Vette trans

The housing and valve body are different, but transmissions from other cars can be used, with minor loss of performance. The pump pressure is higher for Corvettes. This is the tipoff that it is a Corvette 700r4 (I call it "V for Vette"):
