I have a 96 LT1 auto, and a few weeks ago was having trouble starting, and had no power, would bog down, and just not running right. Checked injectors, were all good, check fuel pressue and was 46 or so with vaccum line off, but when driving would drop to 5 or 10 if I floored it. So I changed fuel pump and sock out, sock looked to be full of dirt and clogged. After that pressue went right back up and ran great. Took on a couple long drives and had no issues, was all good.
Today same problem came back, although not as bad. Was driving and all of a sudden lost power and when I hit gas it was like nothing was getting to engine. Turn car off then back on and it will go and seem fine for a few minutes then come back again. Also seems like worse when I turn corner then accelerate, so I made sure gas was full or close and still same issue. I looked where I think fuel filter is supposed to go(just in front of passgener door?) and it looks like previous owner put a piece of rubber gas line instead of filter. Any ideas?
Also pulled codes and was getting
module 1 c12
module 9 err
module a c26 c61 c62
Seems like its backfiring or popping when I lose power also, like cats are clogged or something. How can I check this?
Are you saying the previous owner removed and, Bypassed the in-line fuel filter? you would have to cut and Modify the fuel lines to accomplish this, makes no sense.. look again! From under the car follow the supply and return lines from the engine Compartment, there should be a filter "Can" near your R/H Cat.
A plugged Cat doesn't cause popping and Backfiring! but fuel starvation does..
Even BUBBA wouldn't remove a fuel filter and install some goofey bypass...just ain;t no way.
Did you take the shield off and look at BOTH lines underneath?
Everything you describe screams plugged fuel system....
PROBLEM IS.........
that IF bubba did bypass the filter, ALL that crap went directly into the injectors and they are NOW clogged up...hopelessly.
And NO, fuel injector cleaner will not remove sand, grit, bits of rubber from the old pump etc...the inj have to be replaced.
IIWM, I';d find the previous owner and whip his ***. Then, shake about $300 out of his pockets to pay for the new injectors.
Why would anyone bypass the filter? That's more work than replacing it !
The filter shield is right about where the passenger door hinge is, under the car mounted to the frame. Two 8mm? bolts hold the tin shield in place. Its almost at the edge of the body...just under and inside.
I would change the in line fuel filter, when you find it. It is on the passenger side. Since the previous fuel pump sock (filter) was full of debris, it would be a good idea to pull the pump again and check the sock again. If it has debris again, you may have a bunch of S##t in your tank and need to clean it out.
