Got my oil changed approx 500 miles ago. I've been using synthetic oil since I've own her because the previous owner used it when he owned it. Anyway, yesterday when driving the oil pressure went down to 18 and then bounced up to 23 and then once I started going it would fluctuate in themid 40's. The low pressure was only at stop lights. Nothing else was going on, no stalling, no rough idle. The car ran smooth the whole time driving.
Is this a normal occurance for synthetic oil, or maybe because of the heat in NJ?
This is exactly what my gauge did when my oil sending unit went bad.. It went from rock steady to jumping all over the place.. I would say it's the sending unit, but you may want to check with a pressure gauge to make sure....WW
Thank you both for your advice. Very much appreciated. I also did a search and found this:
From GM manual. Recommended oil viscosity SG SAE 5W-30 ENGINE HOT
minimum oil pressure @ 1,000 RPM 6 psi
minimum oil pressure @ 2,000 RPM 18 psi
minimum oil pressure @ 4,000 RPM 24 psi
The above is for a L98
Hope it helps
I thought if anyone else is having this concern, this may help. It's been pretty damn hot in NJ the past few days and I've been using her as a DD, each way taking about 45 minutes to an hour to and from work. So she's under the cover until this heat wave is over. Then I'll see what's going on, if anything other than the extreme heat.
