Actually 200 isn't all that bad. Many stock C4s will run around 225 degrees. What did you change the thermostat to?

The temp sounds reasonable. Did you burp the system? Did you check the air intake area and the radiator housing for debris?

I humbly disagree!

You didn't say what the conditions are, open road or stuck in traffic, when you are running 200 degrees

If it's open road, then what does it climb to stuck in traffic?

You mentioned a lot of things you have done, but you didn't mention pulling the radiator, cleaning the radiator cavity, cleaning the radiator fins and straightening bent ones.

Also, how old are the hoses?

Hoses can develop tares in the inner wall, that you cannot see. These will block flow

If you are 200 degrees in traffic you are probably fine, but if you are 200 degrees on the open road, I think you may want to look further

that is on open road so i think i do need to try some of the things you said it climbs to 200 slowly but it gets there. i can't remember if i change them when i change the motor two years ago or not . i will try what you said though

First, a 160 stat will not FORCE the engine to operate at 160 F. Your 160 stat is wide open because your radiator cannot get rid of heat fast enough to maintain 160 F and it was never designed to do so. Your 86 uses a 195 stat like my 87 and over 35 mph, my coolant temp is 195. 160 degrees is too cool for operating an automobile engine. Your radiator is clogged with road debris and needs to be cleaned out. The best way to do this is to remove the radiator and clean it out and straighten any bent fins. Clean and straighten the fins on the a/c condenser too. A quick experiment is to blast water backwards with a garden hose through your radiator and then blast water around the radiator cap gap to flush out the debris. Over 35 mph with 75 F air, and no a/c on, you should see close to 160 F. At stoplights no air flows through the radiator and the temp soars until the ECM turns on the fan at 238 F and the temp will then drop to about 215-210. When you get underway the temp will drop further and the fan will go off at 210F. You can get a chip programmed to turn on the main fan at a lower temperature, or like me and others, install a spst switch connected to the green/wh fan relay wire to ground and manually turn on the fan when you know the temp will soar (at stoplights, traffic jams , etc). A further problem is the factory water pump which doesn't pump enough at idle speed and is the reason why I installed a Stewart pump at replacement time do to its higher flow. At a stoplight in 90 weather and with my fan switch on, my coolant temp goes to 200 F and when I get under way it drops to 195. Put your 195 or a 180 thermostat in and get rid of that 160.

If youre running the 160 and youre seeing 200F at cruise, i hope youve been driving it for awhile because it shouldnt be quite that warm. Just install a fan switch or have a chip burned to make your fans come on sooner, and youll be fine.
