Default rollers

What full roller rockers will fit under stock L98 valve covers ? I know there are lots of old threads on this but all things change. There are few different ones available now. Looking to bump up the ratio just because its easier than doing a bigger cam. ZZ4 cam for the record.

I used the ones designed for centerbolt heads but you will still need to grind off or modify the drippers on the inside. someone had them for sale yesterday in the parts for sale

How do you like the zz4 cam? Also if you try to put 1.6 ratio rockers on stock heads you have to check your retainer to seal clearance and the spring coil bind. Lots of aftermarket heads can handle .544 lift but the stock heads will probably need the guides cut down and new springs.

Ive been running this ZZ4 cam for about 80000 miles. Good compromise for all around driving. Just looking for another .10 at the track.
I do have aftermarket heads with big springs.

..... I have had 1.6 Crane Gold's under the factory covers on factory heads with no issues ... I believe Crane made the rockers for the LT4 hot cam kits ............

Good point. Not sure if the composite LT covers had more room than the mag L98 ones. The LTs would look nice. I just dont want to end up with some crap that says, Mr. Gasket, just to get the rockers under them.

If I had to replace my Cranes, I would go with the narrow body Scorpion rockers.
My Crane Energizers must be the largest SBC rocker on the planet and took a little cover modding to clear. Don't believe you would need to do anything for the Scorpions, but maybe a drip tab trim.

Thanks 86. I already trimmed the tabs and squeezed the vent baffles due to having some pretty big valve springs. Right now, Im thinking Scorpion 1.7s. Why cant we leave well enough alone, on these cars ?? First real project coming up is, rebuild the posi. I am carrying 100# of lead shot in the back end just to make it hook.

Yes sir. As another mentioned, I may have broken off the drip rails, or it was the outer bolt versions I used to have with my BowTie phase II's. I like the factory look. I'm running a custom grind Comp with .503 / .510.

Thanks. I currently have roller tips. .474/.501. Kicking around the idea of bumping up the ratio to 1.6 or even 1.7. May just do a new cam but do not really want to work that hard. That and the price of fuel. Rockers are easy to undo. Cam, not so much.

I just put the narrow body Scorpions on my engine. I did grind off the drippers without checking because everyone here said they did not clear. I have no clearance issues whatsoever and I do believe they are a tad quieter than the Crane's I had before.

Can anyone tell me how rollers sound on a quiet motor? Ive had race motors with them, but the exhaust was too loud to hear them. Ive read a few posts where guys are experiencing a clattering noise after installing them. Is that cause they were adjusted/installed wrong? Or, is it cheap parts? Trying to keep mine quiet as possible. h

If you want quiet, stay away from rollers, they chatter. Even though my Scorpions are quieter than the Crane Energizers I had, they still chatter. The sound resembles a solid lifter engine.

I might be wrong, but I seem to remember a few years back Kevin McClelland; who helped develop the ZZ4, and now writes the Q&A for Chevy High Performance magazine; saying in that section, that cam did not work well with 1.6 rockers. You might want to check into that before pulling the trigger on the new rockers. I don't remember what the reason was, as I wasn't ever interested in that cam myself. Good Luck with your project.

Found it- May 2009 CHP... He says the valves become unstable at higher(?) RPM (bouncing on the seat) and the combo makes a good bit of noise too, both due to the high rate of the lobes.

I semi remember that too and thought about it but did not remember details or who said it. need to do more reading. I have stamped steel 1.6s on the exhaust side now and they have been there for years, no problem. I do have some pretty big springs and maybe that helps. With that in mind I may go with 1.65 Scorpions. Still kicking the idea around so no decisions yet. I'd like to change cams but thats a lot of work when you are 60 years old.

i used Comp Cams Pro Magnums (not "narrow-body"). i did have to trim the drip tabs, narrow the posts, and squeeze the baffles.

also, i had to use shorter poly-locks (0.865" tall, Crower).

Good pics. My covers have been modded. those rockers are nice. Would be my first choice if not for the price.
