I have a 1987 C4 im wanting to put a LS1 in. I wanted to see what input you guys had as far as what it will take. Im 15 and this is my first build but have lots of mechanical experience. First off, im building an autocross car. The car is stripped and set up for a cage. I have the Ls1 motor, a hi stall tourqe converter, a flex plate, and a 700 r4 tranny. What else will I need to make the motor and tranny mate? I also have a painless wiring harness for making the c4 compatible with the ls1. I have a computer and I have ls1edit to change settings. What else would to make this all work? Thanks in advance!
I would recommend using a T56... Just saying. But also with your torque converter if you do choose to use an auto, first find out the torque range of the motor at what rpm, and then choose your converter. Or if you plan on putting in extra mods to the engine, wait till you're done, get your dyno results and choose the converter from there. An engine swap isn't just 123. In some cases, you will be running back and forth getting parts you didn't think you needed to make it work. I suggest getting all the emissions components too so that you don't run into any CELs. In older cars its so much easier, but computer controlled systems make it a real PITA. See if someone has already done it and follow a guide of all the stuff you need.
What are your thoughts as far as trannys? I noticed a lot of people use the 4L70e. Would that be a better choice than the 700r4?
It depends.. My 700R4 had a lot of miles on it and it was showing it. I chose to go with a built 4L60E because it can be controlled by the LS PCM and I got a good deal on it. I also have a friend that owns an trans shop and he built it for me.
I had to get an adapter to mate the 700R4 tail shaft to the 4L60E and move the tone ring and align it to the 96 VSS I used.
There is a lot of information in that thread that was posted. That is also a great place to ask questions. GL and if i can help in any way let me know.

Im definetly going with an auto. I have a high stall tourque converter as its going to be an autocross car. Im guessing you have to match the converter to the motor so it can handle the motors power? What do you like about that tranny over the 700? I already have a 700 which is why I was planning to use it
