Oh and can the dash speakers be removed? Crutchfield says no. But I think that if I remove the instrument cluster I can get the drivers side out.
Thank you,
Joe

as for dash speakers, shouldnt be a problem there as far as i remember they didnt have any in the dash unless modified and added like i did..
keep in mind if you do add them that the factory and most other radios only have 2 front outputs(doors) and 2 rear outputs(hatch area) so with a normal setup you will have no output to feed the dash speakers anyhow and no you cant just splice them in with the doors as the radio is setup for certain ohm resistance on the speaker outputs adding speakers will change that drastically and cause alot of problems besides just not being right.

2- To remove the speaker grills you will have to remove the dash. The speaker grills are are screwed into the dash from the bottom.
2a- As was mentioned you cannot just connect 2 speakers to one channel in order to maintain the standard 4ohms impedance, you would actually have to wind up installing 4 speakers with the same 4 ohms impedance on the same channel in series/parallel in order to have a TOTAL of 4 ohms impedance in order not to blow your speakers or your deck.
3- What is Din/Double Din ? http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...,d.eWU&cad=rja
4- I just installed a single din unit, you can with modification install a double din. There's an audio section on this forum very helpful members,

what is the reason you are asking about swapping the deck? if its because its not working are you sure the deck is your problem and not the amps or could be all the above.
I didn't bother because i wanted modern features and because i will eventually add an eq. Plus the previous owner had an aftermarket unit in there already and butchered the original wiring harness behind the dash for the factory radio.
It's up to you what direction you want to take for the amount of trouble you will go through finding a later model bose suitable stereo you might as well upgrade to after market.

I think it is the head unit. It rarely plays a tune. But usually it is just white noise and when I press the AM/FM button it does **** from AM/FM. It stays on even when the radio is off.
I am trying to replace it with a HU that has a CD player. It presently has a cassette in the HU.
Is there a way to deterrmine if the speaker amps are also no good.

also btw GQ-ROD is correct in having to remove the whole dashcap to change/add/remove dash speakers in the early c4's, also when choosing aftermarket speakers to go in there you have to be a lil selective as to how big the magnet is and how far it sticks down as mine have pretty big magnets and bairly fit(i have to flex the dash pretty will just to get it slid back on.. jus a lil first hand fyi

I maxed out the size of my speaker installation, BUT would not really say for most it would be worthwhile considering the amount of modification and fabrication involved.
And you are right getting it back on was very tricky !!
Also the dash and most plastic is very brittle so if not done right can create stress cracks very easily. My dash was already toast so i ordered a cover, rather than pop for the 450.00 repro.
