Default Starter replacement options

I wanted to wait until my rebuild in 6 months, but the starter is on her way out right now. The starter will make a hideous grinding noise every once in a while haha. I think it's the shaft not extending all the way out to catch the flywheel.

Either way, what starters have you guys replaced the OEM with? I will be rebuilding and stroking the 350 using flat tops and keeping the aluminum heads I have with a mild cam so compression will be slightly higher then stock.

I found this on Summit, but I am not sure if it will be a direct replacement... I have the 4+3 Manual Trans and will have a set of long tube headers eventually.

Looks like you need to find out if you have the 153 or 168 teeth on your flywheel/flexplate.

I just replaced mine with an OEM one.

1988 was the first year for the compact starter and I believe that if I had the OEM starter I'd consider a rebuild of "what I've got"! If yours is the original I can't think of a reason not to do yours vs the buy of something that's just "tossed together" and hyped by marketing.

If it's already a rebuilt piece from someone then maybe there's reason to consider something else BUT I think I'd investigate "what I've got"!

Parts should be quite inexpensive I'd think.
