Re: 85 Vette ECM controlled torque converter lock up? (corvette0096)
Just like the title reads.
I see the question mark, but this reads like the title of a topic not started, or a statement. What about... "Re:"? If you are asking if the ECM controls the converter lock up, then the answer is, yes
Re: 85 Vette ECM controlled torque converter lock up? (corvette0096)
It it also possible to manually lock up the torque converter as well. This link is for locking the torque converter on an 82-92 Firebird or Camaro. Since all these cars are produced by GM, I figure it might be the same for all of them. I guess you should check it out first, but this could help if you are wanting to do this. http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/te...ueswitch.shtml
Re: 85 Vette ECM controlled torque converter lock up? (TZFBird)
Here is why i am asking, I am having a tranny built and the guy that is doing it is having it lock up in OD as soon as line pressure is 67psi or greater. This sound right?

He isn't having the trans go to overdrive at 67 pounds. Once the trans is in overdrive, he's having the converter lock up at 67 pounds. Am I reading you correctly? If so, that isn't the normal scenario. As designed, the ECM sends a signel to activate a solenoid in the trans that directs pressure to lock the converter. I don't know a lot about the detailed inner workings of an auto trans, but he MAY be replacing that solenoid with a pressure activated switch, that acts as you describe. Is he doing this to satisfy a request you've made? Maybe he does this, routinely to cure an ill? One way to control converter lock up, is through alterations to the prom. I do know that by design, the ECM does control converter lockup. What I don't know is, if what he's doing is a good or bad idea. If it were MY car, I'd be asking a lot of questions. In the end, you should be satisfied with what he's doing. Good luck.
Re: 85 Vette ECM controlled torque converter lock up? (CFI-EFI)
I should just not worry about it i have seen his work in a 700hp syclone 700r4 and the guy said no problems what so ever. 3 yrs going strong. And that is a all wheel drive truck so i would imagin that would be more stress on the tranny.
Re: 85 Vette ECM controlled torque converter lock up? (corvette0096)
It might be that he is installing a shift improver kit and the kit is made to do exactly that. I remember back when I went through a 700R4 from scratch. I had a B&M kit and then asked about convertor lockup without using electronics. Another guy sold me the Mr Shift, Gil Somebody shift kit and I returned it because it would have taken place of the transmission overhaul kit I already was going to install.
It was in my 69 Chevelle. I went with a B&M adjustable lockup controller. Knowing what I know now, it is really about 5 bucks worth of parts...
