Had my overdrive rebuilt two years ago via 5k speed. It just started not working when I gave it gas. If I have my foot off the gas it goes into OD. But as soon as I give it a little gas it goes out. I readjusted my TPS thinking that might be it, also checked the ATF in the OD. Any ideas ???
Check to make sure your kickdown cable isn't binding, stuck or misadjusted. If the kickdown isn't right it will think you're giving it enough throttle to downshift out of OD.
I would look at it while you or someone else pushes the pedal, not move the linkage by hand to see if it moves. It may only bind while pushing on the pedal. I had issues on my 85 z28 with the kickdown/tv cable when I got on the throttle...yes it was an auto, but the principal is the same. An auto uses it for increased trans pressure to downshift on acceleration, the 4+3 uses it more or less to send you to direct drive gear [o/d off].
Hope it helps...trying to pay forward...OZ has saved my a$$ on some other stuff through his posts
If the ratchet teeth are not holding the kickdown cable where it needs to be, it could be returning it back to the minimum distance when the throttle is not being pushed and causing it to be pulled with the throttle when it is pushed. Will your o/d kick out right away while you're driving or does it seem to be at a specific mph/rpm that it kicks out? I just skimmed the link earlier, but if I remember right, the ratchet teeth/ button should hold it from returning back. I'll see if I can post a picture when I get home.
Mine does this when the OD is not topped off with fluid. All the way to the bottom of the fill plug. I have to add a quarter of a qt. every summer or so......and the wire going to the solenoid, where it plugs into the tranny, make sure you have a good connection there. The female spade end might need to be tightened up.
I called Brian at s-k speed. He is the one that rebuilt it two years ago. He said it sounds like either the filter came off the pickup tube or the clutch pack went bad. I am putting it on a lift tomorrow night to check. He said if it went bad he will fix it for nothing. Which I thought was really cool considering he only warranties them for a year. If that's the case I will only have to take it off and ship it to him. Will let you guys know what I find on the lift tomorrow night. Thanks for the guidance guys.
