Default 85 4+3 overdrive help

Had my overdrive rebuilt two years ago via 5k speed. It just started not working when I gave it gas. If I have my foot off the gas it goes into OD. But as soon as I give it a little gas it goes out. I readjusted my TPS thinking that might be it, also checked the ATF in the OD. Any ideas ???

Bad wiring somewhere giving a intermittent connection on the O/d control circuit?

The early relays are known for problems from the insulation breaking down

Do you mean the relay on the firewall next to the brake booster?

There should be two relay together.
One for the O/d and the other for the fuel pump

I found the relay and it had a bunch of bare wires touching. In the process of fixing them. I will let you know it it fixes it.

So what does it do?
It automatically engages O/d as it should but randomly drops out
or it just randomly engages the O/d?

Does pushing the O/d switch have any effect on it's operation; while driving or before driving off from a stop?

It goes in as it should when you take your foot off the gas. When you just touch the gas it goes out

and yes the switch on the shifter is turning it on and off as it should. Just when you give it any gas at all it comes out of OD

Check to make sure your kickdown cable isn't binding, stuck or misadjusted. If the kickdown isn't right it will think you're giving it enough throttle to downshift out of OD.

Sound feasible OZ?

I haven't looked where it hooks to the OD but it has a ton of slack up on the throttle body

I would look at it while you or someone else pushes the pedal, not move the linkage by hand to see if it moves. It may only bind while pushing on the pedal. I had issues on my 85 z28 with the kickdown/tv cable when I got on the throttle...yes it was an auto, but the principal is the same. An auto uses it for increased trans pressure to downshift on acceleration, the 4+3 uses it more or less to send you to direct drive gear [o/d off].

Hope it helps...trying to pay forward...OZ has saved my a$$ on some other stuff through his posts

Would it . Or could it just come out of adjustment like that. It was fine one minute.

If the ratchet teeth are not holding the kickdown cable where it needs to be, it could be returning it back to the minimum distance when the throttle is not being pushed and causing it to be pulled with the throttle when it is pushed. Will your o/d kick out right away while you're driving or does it seem to be at a specific mph/rpm that it kicks out? I just skimmed the link earlier, but if I remember right, the ratchet teeth/ button should hold it from returning back. I'll see if I can post a picture when I get home.

Mine does this when the OD is not topped off with fluid. All the way to the bottom of the fill plug. I have to add a quarter of a qt. every summer or so......and the wire going to the solenoid, where it plugs into the tranny, make sure you have a good connection there. The female spade end might need to be tightened up.

I called Brian at s-k speed. He is the one that rebuilt it two years ago. He said it sounds like either the filter came off the pickup tube or the clutch pack went bad. I am putting it on a lift tomorrow night to check. He said if it went bad he will fix it for nothing. Which I thought was really cool considering he only warranties them for a year. If that's the case I will only have to take it off and ship it to him. Will let you guys know what I find on the lift tomorrow night. Thanks for the guidance guys.

Ask if he still doing the work?

He has been the go to 4+3 man for years but there was word a while back he was selling his stock and getting out of doing them.

No point referring guys to him if he no longer does the work
