What mufflers are you guys running? I'm looking for a 3" inlet and I want to keep the stock 91 tips.
Right now my exhaust sounds good but the drone of the mufflers drives you crazy and are super loud and annoying! Looking for something with less drone currently have some crap turbo mufflers on the car (came with the car) but don't want to spend a ton of money on mufflers right now.
Dynomax seems to make a no-drone muffler that might work. If you have a true dual exhaust, you can add resonators which greatly reduce noise (bullet mufflers). These are very cheap.
Dynomax "VT" (valve technology) to be exact. It runs like a normal muffler till you stomp on it, and the valve opens for striaght through performance. Corsa's are supposed to be real good too, but are a pretty penny.
I personally run Walker Quiet Flows, with a Flowmaster Hushpower, in place of the cat. Flows real well, and is very quiet. Its fun beating somebody, and watching them getting pulled over cause they were so loud. h
I just bought a couple of the Dynomax VTs - should receive them late this week and I'll post about how that goes when I get them installed. I'm using the rest of the stock 2.5" exhaust so I'll have a little fab work to make them work because these don't come in a center inlet / center outlet design in the 2.5" version. The do offer this in their 3" version.
I've found a lot of discussion about them and they do sound good but I've only found one guy who put them on a corvette. He's running a custom 3" system.
3" exhaust will always be louder
Even with 20" case muffs on my other car its still super friggin loud at certain speeds in the car. Course making more power/moving more air doesnt help. System probably a little oversized anyway price you pay to make power.
the sound bounces around in the pipe more with a larger system as its moving slower and you get to hear it.
Get a stock type muffler or Corsa and the best resonator you can buy
Magnaflow makes a nice one. Cats help a touch.
IMO most muffler upgrades dont do what we think they will any tiny gain may be overcome by unwanted noise. Always liked quiet stealthy cars. We all want to think our cars NEED a larger system but do they really? Most of the time the answer is no.
Mine is factory stock from 86. Most would consider it to quiet but I like it. Just enough low rumble to hear what the engine is doing. Yet, with the odd hours I keep, I can take a cruise at 5 AM and not bother the neighbors.
The 91 has the benefit of being able to go with LT1 mufflers. Im currently running stock 93 cat back and plan on going with LT1 stainless in the future.
The problem isn't all because of the exhaust. I run headers to 3" X-pipe, 3" straight back to Dynomax mufflers and have very little drone and sounds great. The way Vett's are made seem to make small amounts of drone almost unbearable. I think it may have to do with fiberglass floors, the tunnel proximity to seats and small amount of cubic inches in the cabin. If you are into quality music you know how hard it is to get a stereo to sound good without being muffled in a Vette. I found that by gutting the interior down to the bare fiberglass and putting sound deadening material "everywhere" floors, behind seats, alongside tunnel, rear storage compartment/ABS compartment at least underside of compartment doors and any other surface you can. This helped beyond belief. You don't need to buy the high dollar stuff either and Summit Racing sells various materials at reasonable prices. you will save a lot buying it by the roll and cutting it yourself as opposed to the pre-cut kits. Thicker is better if using the OEM style "insulation". This will also help cut down on interior heat which is higher in Vette's because of close proximity of seats to the tunnel and things like headers and 3" exhaust, etc.
If you are happy with the sound of your exhaust now and the drone is only slightly troublesome, I would start there it is a win/win and often cheaper than re-working the exhaust. If it doesn't bring drone to a tolerable level then you still aren't out anything really. Your car will now be cooler, quite like a Cadillac and the stereo will sound better.
