Hi all. The past couple of days my C4 has just randomly shut down on me while traveling twice. This seems to occur when I'm beginning to stop or take off at a light or stop sign. I have not had a chance to do any diagnosis yet but just wondering if this problem sounds familiar to anyone.
The 1st sign of a problem was that it would not crank after sitting for a few hours yesterday after about a 30 mile drive. I turned it over about 3 times then pressed the gas and turned it over and it cranked.
I then drove about 25 miles (without any trouble), exited the freeway and was making a u-turn under a freeway and it just shut down. I turned it over about 3 times then pressed the gas and turned it over and it cranked. I drove it home (~30 miles) after it sat for about 2 hours without any problems
I was driving it to work this am (~10 miles) after it sat all night and was taking off at a light and it died. I turned it over about 3 times then pressed the gas and turned it over and it cranked and was able to get to work. The "check engine light soon" light came on for a few minutes but then went off. Unfortunately, I did not have my scanner.
If the injectors are the stock Rochesters I would start there. They can go short to ground, and heat the injector driver causing a fault. Once it cools it may start again.
Scan it tonight and see what code it pulls if any?
Thanks. I'll pull the codes tonight. This does not mean there can't be a problem but it has new stock (Rochester) injectors in it. I'd be suprised if they have 4,000 miles on them. Fuel pump is new (<1,000 miles), as well.
I just drove it approx. 40 miles round trip and there was no shut down this time.
Look at the wires/harness plugs for all the ing components. That just recently happened to me. Coil wire tab was broken off the wire..vibration would cause it to break the connection and shut down at low rpm.
FWIW
Cranking means the engine is turning over with the starter. Cranking does not mean that its running, firing or anything else. These descriptions are confusing. No crank conditions mean nothing happens when the key is turned, thus different problem than a 'no-start' condition that means it cranks, but does not fire and run.

I had a corroded wire shut my 89 down just after starting out of an intersection the day I bought the car! After getting over my innitial anger, I called the place and they came and towed it to the dealership because it would not start at all. He called an hour later and told me it was a corroded wire going to the ECU. Worth looking into.
Thanks. Will do this weekend. I did pull the codes last night. I had code 42 (Electonic Spark Timing (EST) Circuit and 57 (Fuel Pump Circuit- Low Voltage). come up. I reset the codes and am driving the car to confirm they are real and not just historical. I installed a new fuel pump in a few months back and had some distributor work done recently but not reset at the time and the car has been sittin since them. I did drive it today and it did not shut down.

The code 42 will set when the EST connector is opened to set the timing.
The low fuel pump voltage could be dirty contacts in the fuel pump relay or dirty connector pins at the relay or the fuel sender. You might have some kind of wiring problem.
Ok, I'll check around for loose connections, etc; The good news is that it has been running well for the past week and a half. I've been driving it everyday and has not stalled since 9/3.
