I cant remove the pin from the shifter linkage and that dumb butt boot isnt helping things any is there any way to remove that boot and is there any other way to get the pin out than hitting it with a punch and a hammer the punch keeps sliding off and i cant get the pin out

I had a problem with the boot also. I ended up using a very long tie wrap. Make a loop and then tie onto anything behind it. Zinch that baby up! Make sure you have that slide ring off the linkage. Take a thin long screw driver with small head and gently tap it out. It should just pop out. If your hands are big you might have to lower the exhaust too.
Then the fun begins. I had a hard time putting the cotter pin in the new shifter. I ended up taking it to a mechanic and paying him $10 bucks! :yesnod: Then when your ready to install it helps to have someone lower the shifter from the top while you are underneath the car. :D Believe me I did it with one person and had to get creative there also!
I think the directions say a few hours, maybe if you performed this every day! :jester I spent an 8 hour Saturday afternoon, but I did have cold beverages in hand!
Re: installing shifter cant get pin out!!!! (9vette3)
Shifter is a tricky install, i have tried both the Hurst and the B&M, i will say the Hurst was a dream to install above the B&M.. the pin your referring to, its a hit or miss situation no pun intended..my 95 was a bear to wrestle with, and my fathers 96, the first tap sent the pin sailing out the top.. i ended up taking a very small drill bit and drilling about .060" start hole to set the drift point in to keep it from bouncing all over the place. a heat gun is a nice tool to use on the tight ones, heat the shift shaft up trying to avoid the pin, start at the outside and let them metal have a chance to expand, this helps.. another small trick is to get a can of comressed air from circuit cuty or walmart, the kind used to clean and blow out computers.... if you hole this can upside down, with the extension nozzle on, it will emit a subtemp blast that can be aimed at the pin.. so heat the shaft and freeze the pin and then have a friend standing by with the hammer and drift this should make things alot simpler... other then that, having to drive that critter out is no fun. but it will come out. If your installing a B&M, make a note of what pin they gave you to replace the stock pin..in alot of cases the pin is too big.. IT WILL CRACK the shift shaft if you try to force it in 60-80 bucks worth and more down time. the correct pin is a spring pinhollow with a slit down the length of it. this too is a treat to get in, but much easier then the other one. also try soaking if you haven't already the shaft and pin with a penetrating solvent, never hurts to try, douse it down and let is sit, a non-flamable solvent and heat gun may get more of the penetrating solvent between the hole and the pin too.. othe then this, i know what you mean, i had to work on that pin for about 3 hours the first go around. now a shifter from start to finish after 9 installs take about an holur and a half with dropping the exhaust and jacking the car included. Don't give up stay fopcused and try not to get frustrated...a clear mind will help!!
Re: installing shifter cant get pin out!!!! (ZRWANABE)
I vice gripped the boot (gently) and pulled it back out of the way.
I too had major problems getting the pin out. I did it in two stages:
#1. Get it moving first: I took a large, heavy driver (much large than the hole) and ground the tip down so it would just fit in there. This got it moving. About 1/8 inch. That's all you need.
#2. Now take the proper size driver and it should be a breeze to get it out the rest of the way.
NOTE#1. you DO have the circlip ring removed? Just checking...
NOTE#2. you do not have to drive the pin all the way out. Just enough so that it frees the shifter shaft.

I had to use an air hammer to get mine out. The 8 lb sledge just wouldn't do it. I talked to a guy at B&M and zrchris. Apparently this is a common problem.

I am yet to install my Hurst after reading in the instructions "Drop the exhaust". Is this needed? Before I start, I will soak all the parts in PB Blaster.
Cheers,
Robert

BTW- would a center punch help? Ya know, a punch that you depress and when it bottoms the spring out it releases. This help greatly on the F-body drift pin removals for me.
Good luck,
Robert

"Drop the exhaust". Is this needed?
Bob, I didn't drop my exhaust to install the Hurst. However, my hands did get pretty beat up. It is a very tight working area with the exhaust in place.

Thanks for the heads up.
BTW- Would a center punch, a punch that depresses a spring and then releases the head of the punch to mark metal work and such, work better than a punch and hammer?

I only needed a punch, a hammer, and very little effort to get the pin out.
Re: installing shifter cant get pin out!!!! (9vette3)
Well at 6'-2" and big handed, I am definetley going to have to drop the exhaust, not the biggest deal, just adds a little more time tothe job. Especially on the ground.
Cheers,
Robert
Re: installing shifter cant get pin out!!!! (Bob Mosaic)
Bob, I'm 6'1" with big hands and did the install with the exhaust intact. I started to drop the exhaust, but had trouble braking loose the passenger side.
Re: installing shifter cant get pin out!!!! (STL94LT1)
well i had to do it!!! today i had to ask my friends at all transmission world to help me out luckly they let me use there lift and showed me some tricks of the trade to help me get it out the big problem i had was that the last guy that put the shifter in (newer trans in car) hammered the pin flat on the one side so i had to use a drill to "intise" the pin but it is all out now and i should be done in the morning cant wait to feel the B&M :D
