I am in the process of installing a turbo 400 in my 88. The flywheel I got with the tranny was too big (168 tooth) and wouldn't clear the starter. I ordered a SCAT 153 tooth flywheel and went to install it tonight and neither set of holes in the flywheel will line up with my 9" converter. Does the Corvette use a special bolt pattern converter or flywheel difeferent from other GM cars and trucks? Will a aftermarket mini starter fit and clear with full length headers so I can run the larger flywheel? Or is it possible that the flywheel was mis-drilled.
Re: Flywheel, converter, and starter help!!!!!!!! (Justme)
I sent you this in an e-mail but I thought I would paste it in here for others to review and maybe add to. Good luck.
I have a 153 tooth flexplate. I didn't have any problem bolting up my torque
converter. I wonder if your converter is for the older flex plate or
something. I use a Delco starter from a '91 Corvette with a 6 speed tranny.
You should take a look at these at your favorite parts store. I use a
lifetime guarantee one from Autolite. I get mine at Checker Auto Parts. They
are very high torque, gear reduction, and compact. I can change the starter
with my long tube headers and road race oil pan installed. The starters
always die on Vettes with long tube headers because it is very tight down
there and they get too hot. With the lifetime guarantee I just take it back
and exchange it. I just got a new one last week actually. I go through about 1 a summer. I'm quick at taking them out and putting them in. Don't buy one of those mini-starters. I went through 2 of those. Waste of money. Good luck with your torque converter too. Keep me posted what you found out.
