It started first when I tried to start eng. turned over fine but wouldn't start. Waited thirty seconds then it started. Now at times when driving down road eng shuts off, I wait a few seconds and it starts up and runs fine. Happening more frequently now. Afraid to drive it in traffic. Water pump, opti-spark, fuel pump, map sensor are newly replaced. Any ideas as to what could be the problem??
Also, do a search on this forum about the ICM and heat sink- the ICM is susceptible to heat soak and there are simple fixes to help prevent this.
Changed the ICM and car ran perfect for twenty minutes, parked it for two hours and tried again, wouldn't start. Hooked up the jumper for code and only got one code, H72 - gear shift selector circuit?? Tried again and car started right up ran perfect. Help anyone?
When it won't start try wiggling the shifter. There is a switch mounted on the side of the shifter that tells the ECM if you're in Park or Neutral. It has slotted mounting holes so you can adjust it.

Thanks for your reply. How do I get to this switch? From the inside of the car or from underneath?
We'll after being convinced the problem was ignition and not knowing the history of the car so I didn't mind replacing parts. Parts replaced were ICM, ECM, fuel pump, map sensor. Previously replaced when water pump blew out was the w pump and opti. Still engine turned over but nothing. Decided to shoot starting fluid in intake and this time engine ran but like it was a diesel. Any ideas??
My 89 shut off on me a few times and finally would not start at all. It ended up being a corroded wire connection going to the ECM somewhere around the battery. The guy I bought the car from found it and replaced the entire wire and connector. No problems with that since. Not sure if this will help, but it's worth a shot.
