Passenger window switch broken on '87. Help needed.
hey guys, my moms '87 has had a problem thats finally bugged me so much that I need to fix it. The passenger window up/down switch on the center console is broken. Where it usually switches into the "up" and "down" positions to put the windows up, this switch moves up and down freely. I used to circumvent the problem by pushing in on the switch slightly, and that seemed to make contact with whatever is underneath the switch and allow the windows to move, but now I can't get the window down. How would I get at the switch to replace it, what do I need to do? Thank you for your help!

The switch is $8-$10 and plugs in. I just removed all the screws that were holding down the trim parts that were in my way and took the old one out of its socket with a screwdriver. Stick the new one in and replace the screws in the trim and you're done. Simple stuff, took about 10 minutes.

You need to take off the center console to get to the switch. If it's like an '86, the console covering the radio & AC has to come off too, as well as the armrest cover on the glovebox and the gear selector ****. It might also involve taking off the console around the speedo and tach, or at least loosening it. Be careful, that 16 yr old plastic might be a little bit brittle. Maybe you can just loosen the center console enough to get at the switch.
I had the same issue in my '87 with the driver's switch. Sometimes it moved freely and you had to push down and "click" it into place to work.
I replaced it with a new one. The hardest part was that the harness beneath the switch kind of hangs free so I had to hold it up against the new switch while I pressed the new switch onto it with a screwdriver or something. I forget what I used. You'll see what I mean when you do it. :)

I remember that, what a PITA that was! :cuss
If I remember right, I had to take out the other switch so I could reach underneath to hold the harness with my finger tips on the other side.

had the same problem with my 88 when they broke in the car. The passenger switch broke completely, insurance wouldn't pay for itt so I asked the shop guy how much - he said $6.50 for the switch. Duh - no brainer I'll pay for it. Now I need to replace the other one that has gone intermittent.
Looks fairly simple, like the others said its a bunch of screws to lift the console plastic up, two screws holding it in place and then push on the connector.

The window switch is a generic unit and you can find replcements at NAPA, Pep Boys, and other auto parts stores for under $10. NAPA sells a chrome plated unit that replaces the stock black one exactly. Might look kinda cool if .you replace both switches at one time.

Just did one on my 85 not a bad job but like Brian said you have to get something under the plug to get it to lock in place..
Okay, sounds good, tomorrow I will take the switch out and head to Pep Boys to find a suitable replacement. Jeff, thanks for the offer, it wouldn't be the first time you have offered to help me, but I should be able to pull this one off by myself.
