Default 89 6 Speed Build

Ok guys and gals,

I am about to make some final decisions on what I am actually going to do to my motor .... Looking for some help and advice since most of you have been through this already.

I have a Super Ram intake , Corsa Cat back exhaust ( I am going to delete the "y" pipe) , and I am going to mate it with a melrose headers / X pipe system to install on the car.

Now what to do with the rest of the motor......

Obviously Heads and a Cam ..... but on the build.... Part of me wants to stroke the motor and go to town. Part of me doesn to go that far.

If I get a set of good flowing heads and Cam where do you think that puts me on the HP / Torque Range ?

Where do you think it lands if I stroke it ?

I would like to land in the 400's with both HP / Torque i think.

Is emissions testing a factor?

I'm telling you now, all the "magic" of a motor is in the heads, cam, and intake.

In my opinion, I'd go with a short runner intake (TPIS, LT-x converted), AFR 195cc-210cc heads, and a healthy cam (all figures are in a range: intake; 228-232, exhaust 228-236, .570-.600 lift on each end, and 112-114 LSA). Even with the 350ci, you should easily see 400+ hp/tq. Expect a shift in the power band, but this can be "corrected" with differential gears (3.73-4.10)

Heck, switch out the injectors, and fuel pump, convert to E85, and really be impressed. (After a tune)

Unless he's going to build it with a lot of compression (14 to 1) why do you think changing over to E85 is going to do anything?

E85 adds power even on low compression engines. My vette picked up 19HP on E85. (Used more fuel) My stock 5.3 chevy truck picked up 10 RWHP on E85 and GM rates the engine at 315 HP on gas and 326 HP on E85.

I am not recommending that the poster run E85 but if he wants to there is power available.

That sums it up. You do have to burn more of it (by volume), but the fuel is beneficial in nearly any combination. It just becomes more obvious in high compression, or FI applications.

Do you want 400hp/trq at the flywheel or rear wheels?

If living with the drawbacks of E85 is worth 10 hp to you I hope this is a very serious machine that isn't leaving performance on the table...anywhere. I don't think that I'm ready to reduce the range of the vehicle, and depending upon the grain market spend more to fuel it for that small amount of hp. This is especially true when none of the engines you mentioned are optimized to the point of there being no HP left to find. But that's just me, gotta love America and free choices. Just my .02

Here is information I have, my 355 with a superram, ZZ-409 cam from TPIS, headers, 195cc trick flow heads, and 52mm throttle body made 360 RWHP and 400 RWTQ in a Firebird and ran and drove great on the street. That works out to 425 HP and 470 TQ at the engine.

You do not need a 383 to acheive your goals but it will make more power and torque with a 383 built correctly.
