My drivers side rear leaf spring dropped to the ground..fortunately at only 20 mph..my question is do I need a new spring or just the mount that holds it..its in the shop and I'm sure they will want to bop me for a whole new spring..opinions??
Sounds like your outer spring bolt either broke or the nut unthreaded off the bolt. The bolts use a castle nut with a cotterpin to hold in place. You may get lucky only needing a new bolt/nut/washers/bushings. I would replace both sides.
The same thing happened to me a couple months ago. Bolt was fine and the nut/cotter pin were still intact, so who knows wth happened....
Check carefully for damage on the end. Any splintering and you really should replace it. They are about $350-450 from most of the regular suppliers. Fleabay and the C4 parts section can turn some up for a lot less. I bought a complete set for about $250 from someone on the parts section here...
Also check the center mounts... one of mine broke from the torque of dragging it (and I was driving very slow when it happened as well.)
If the END of the spring dropped because the nut came off the long bolt, replace bolt and nut. IF the nut and bolt are intact and the spring broke you replace the spring...which is not always a bad thing..just $250 worth of spring and some shop labor...maybe another $100.
Beware, IF you need a spring, YOU should find it. Shops buy from their vendors and those can be $450 or MORE....you can find good used springs on FleaBay form $150.
