Default 84 belt setup...

Is it serpentine or v?
I ordered my new alternator at O'Reilly s and it was a v-belt pulley. Sure enough, auto zone, advance, Napa, Jegs, and summit all list the 84 as having a v belt.
Its not. 6 rib serpentine all the way...
Wonder what is up with that?

Was there a mid year transition? Or have I been converted?

I hope you didn't give O'Reilly's your multi-groove belt pulley with your core. Just trade pulleys so you have the correct pulley on your new alternator.

Never heard of an 84 with a v-belt pulley.. When I checked the O'reiley site I got pulley change may be required..

No, I still have my original alternator.
The 85 alternator was a rib pulley, I just swapped the whole thing.

What was your real question. Your original post mentions '84 and people commented as to what needed to be done and NOW you're discussing an '85 and you mention you're all set!

What gives?

The relation to the 85 was simply that O'reillys had the alternators for that year as a serp and it worked for me.

my questions were regarding the originaly configuration of the car.

Only assembled with serpentine from factory!

An '84 "as built" I believe were all 97A units and the service alternator from GM for that after '85 was a 108A - I believe I've seen mentioned that there were actually 108A on the later '84 BUT since the 97A shared many applications for other GM the alternator was supplied with the most popular pulley configuration with notes a pulley from the old maybe required. That was a very common "rebuilders" approach to things.

The '85 you purchased is likely a 120A unit I would think unless the rebuilder has mixed the 120A with a higher output to eliminate inventory issues. The 120A build with a V-drive was very rare in GM so the more popular multi-groove pulley was installed as the default.

I had the same problem with a parts place, ordered an 84 alt twice and both times received them with v pulleys. I still had my original alt. so had an auto electric shop rebuid mine for $60.

The part number is the same for an 85 as for an 84, but the pulleys are different. Both are 108a though.
