fuel pump

I have an 85 L98. Lately it's been setting a code 54. I searched the archives and got some good leads.
My question is this - after pulling the fuel pump (just to look at everything in there), I'm really curious how the wiring works. Don't liquids conduct electricity? Because the power and ground wires, and the fuel level wires for that matter, are all exposed in there, at least the contacts are. Seems like it would cause all kinds of problems with shorts. Obviousely it works, but it just seems a little weird.
Thanks for any insights.
While I was changing my fuel pump I had similar thoughts. I guess the electrical contacts are firm so no chance for sparks.
BTW, if you're having fuel delivery problems be sure to clean those three contacts just under the mounting flange. They oxidize over time and can cause problems with fuel delivery and possibly fuel level indication.
