Default Custom Chip

I am currently looking into having a custom chip made by a someone on this site. My car is an 88 that is bone stock , automatic. I plan on maybe putting magnaflow catback in the spring. Just looking to wake her her up a hair. Does anyone have experience with these? Thanks for your input. I'm doing it anyway , just looking to see if anyone used them before.

On a stock engine there is little to be gained performance wise ,
but a custom tune allows you to adjust many things like the temp the fans run at ,the speed the convertor locks up at , delete VATS and EGR , etc.
Anything programmed in the tune can be modified

With the 88 the power enrichment spark table can be modified to bring full advance sooner, and eliminate any computer lag time. As Vettoz said other things can be modified like fan temps, injector size, and or use 89 programming to eliminate the cold start injector. most any good programmer should be able to do this for you. my site is linked in my username if you'd like to see it. mine is dedicated to helping anyone, and or all the way up to doing everything for yourself. see my links page for more information on getting started yourself.

You need to wait until after some more serious modifications are done before going to a custom tune.

I have a question for you, would it be worth it on my 1989 corvette to have a tune done on it? It is almost completely stock. The only thing done to it, is I made a custom exhaust for it using a good flowing cat and only using one dual muffed right after the cat and deleted the pre-cats. Would there be any performance gain or gas mileage gain to where it would be worth it? Also what would the cost be around.

Thanks, stephen

Honestly, the biggest gain is being able to have a lower fan temp programmed in for the fans. Bringing power enrichment on sooner does increase the ET it would be hardly noticeable. If yours runs good now with no SES light and you're happy with the fan temps as it is I would say no. Bigger injectors would be a yes. in my username is my website dedicated to programming TPI. You're already 89, so you have some of the best for the mass air years already.
Mostly, I help people like Davis Gantt who had a big cam he didn't even know what it was. He datalogged it, and I tuned it. Kind of a hobby for me mostly, and keeps me away from the TV and out of trouble.

So basically on my bone stock 88 , it's kind of of a waste to custom tune it? I'm happy with it's performance. wouldn't mind a little kick in the pants but don't want to spend big bucks to do so. What should I do for a cheap bolt on? Anything in mind? I know the ZR-1 black wheels aren't going to do it lol. I'm also putting either Borla or magna flow cat back. Will that do it ?

No, you need to wait until more serious $$$ mods.
