Default Carpet time

I picked up the request last week from my tech editor at Auto Enthusiast Magazine to produce a full story on replacing the carpet in my 94’ The OEM carpet in there now still looks good with a few wear spots but it is 20 years old and is starting to fade.

With the assistance of a parts tech at Corvette America, I’ll be doing in-depth research on replacement padding and carpet adhesives before I lay in black OEM style carpet sets front and rear.

I’ll be blogging my progress on FB with words and images-I’ll post the link once I start.

IMO make the story more meaningful by removing factory insulation/deadening, run new speaker wires, and install dynamat while you've got the carpet out.

Or make it is separate piece on it's own with pictures

Looking forward to your article. When will your article come out? Planning to do my carpet in my 1994 this winter also.

I would highly advise that you re-install the mass-backed carpet style where it is offered like the factory provided.. I would also install the Dyna-mat Extreme on the floors. And when you go to install any padding. I would use the Dyna-mat Dynapad. This would take of the interior sound quality and vibration issues.

Best of luck to you in your project.

I'll be re-install the mass-backed carpet style.

As for running cables and Dynamat, I'll take a look at the Dynamat, but running new cables is not in the plan. At this point this is a basic carpet installation, however; once I start pulling out the old carpet...plans could change depending on what I encounter as I progress.

If you still have a factory radio in the car...you will not need to run any wiring because it is completely different than an aftermarket radio system...which can still use the factory wiring if time is taken to check wire circuits. I do it quite often for aftermarket radios. I do not run any extra wiring. No crazy amps and such are being installed.

Glad you are using the mass-backed carpet. Do not be surprised when you pull the carpet out that the underlayment is flattened and somewhat "questionable" to re-install. Especially the front floor board areas. Just a "heads-up" on that. I usually have the Dynapad ready to go. For what that is worth.

I have done 2 vettes so far, its a fairly simple job and I used duct insulation from home depot. it peels and sticks just like the stuff that costs 10 times as much like dynamat. i think it was about $20 a roll and you might need 3 rolls. The only place you need adhesive is on the trans tunnel. As mentioned, run all your stereo wires, even if you are not putting in an after market it doesnt hurt to run them back into the cargo trunk so its all set when you need it. also run some appropriate wire into the center console for ipod/gps/phone etc. hopefully you dont find any cracks in the footwells like I did in both of my vettes from knuckleheads who dont know where to place a jack but even that it fairly easy fix. I bought mine from wilcox both times and the fit was good. Good luck with it, you will love the new sound or lack of. also, take the carpet off the front and rear speakers and replace with speaker material which you can get at joanne fabric. what a difference that made. I guess GM engineers thought that carpet wouldnt dull the sound quality.

Check out this excellent speaker wire from Sears.

Thanks Elrick. This is the real world advice I am looking for. I'll keep you in mind if I run into any issues on this project.
