I just picked up a D36 with a 3.07 gear to replace the 2.59. The book says pull the whole thing bat wing and all. It also says remove the exhaust pipes. Removing 20 year old exhaust pipes should be fun.
There is one flange on the resonator with bolts, the other is a slip-fit. It might be easier to just unbolt the entire system at the exhaust manifolds. Then all you have to deal with are the hangers. Don't forget to unhook the wires to the O2 sensors.
The exhaust system on the LT1 engines is a one piece cat-back. There are no shortcuts, you have to remove the whole cat back. Start with the emergency brake cable.
It has to come out anyway, you must support the C-Beam before your remove the differential/batwing.
I left the wing on and just exchanged the pumpkin saves some work. You need to pull the exhaust from cats back like Petes pic and support the trans before you pull the c beam loose.
