I know I sound like a moron but there is no hatch behind my drivers seat unless I have to tear all the rug out to get at it .mine is a convertible has nostorage compartments in the back .. As far as I can tell abs isn't doing anything shuts down at 3mph. Light comes on at start up goes off till car is moved
Can someone familer with 86 vert give me a shout before I start tearing rugs up
In refrence to phosgene . The master and booster on this car are both repco aftermarket parts ,can they be the cause???
Thank you sir !!!! Glad I didn't start ripping rugs out. I phoned the corvette guys down in vineland and they don't have that abs test tool for the 86 so I 'm on my own . I'll be crawling in under the speaker to look in the morn
I'm thinking that I felt a resistance to flow when I was bleeding the brakes .I always do my own brakes and have always found that the pedal is quite easy when the bleeder is opened to the tool I use .not the case with this vet The po changed all brake hardware when he first started restoring .. If the entire sys was all that bad I wonder if junk was pumped into the abs when they redid the system . And might be why my pedal is so stiff .I want to look at this system to see if I can check it for flow . I don't care for the abs that is on my 2000 ranger . I might take a look and just bypass this system .I understand that parts are not available except used . I would feel a lot safer running direct than using used brake parts .

I pulled the rear speaker today .the unit is nicely packed in there isn't it . it is very clean but the pad under the rug is wet from when I last washed the car as the hatch for the vert roof seal must leak so it has been damp .I pulled the relays and was able to check the aluminum one but the other has a diode in it so i'm not sure about it .All connections are clean as well as ground . I am getting a relay click on start up and have power to the unit . I'm going to have someone drive it and srr if I getting anything when it moves . It won't be fun to remove and bypass this system being its location . I'm not sure what to do with it at this point .
Seamoose, before you dismiss the idea of someone else having a scan tool consider that SnapOn makes testers that cover a wide variety of cars and systems. Some independent shop in your area may have the scanner and the cables needed. Were it me, I'd start with the brake repair shops and ask them if they can scan it. Then I'd move on to other shops.
There is also Gordon Killebrew I think this is his number but I don't know if he is back at work yet (recovery from wreck) 1-800-398-3883 (800-For Your VETTE)
Thank You , I'm returning to work on Monday so I need to concentrate on updating on what went on the past few mts while I had my hip redone and get my head and body ready for work.
I need to get away from the vet anyway as I 've been overwhelmed with the amount of work I had to do right off on it .I got 8000 into now and be lucky to get 6500 for it . I'll most likely try fool with a bit on my days off .No sense trying to get out of it till spring So i'll try to correct what I can without spending too much more on . i'll call around Im sure that tester was used for other cars also but I don't want for another grand just for testing . .
. A lot of info was referenced by forum members that I need to reread about testing abs while the car is driven .I'm a critical sys engineer so i'm supposed to be able to fix almost anything !! Ha Ha this certainly has been a challenge !! It is receiving a signal on startup and it s clean in in box so the sys maybe salvageable .

The only tool that can diagnose the ABS system on 86-89 cars is the specialty kent moore tool (j-35890) I referenced above that connects directly to the abs unit in the rear compartment.

SeaMoose: I have an '86 convertible as well, and went throught this last winter. Give me a call if you want at (610) 360-5836 if you want to discuss........

Here is a photo of the said tool and the J35592 pinout box.
After doing all the test I can do here Ive come to the conclusion that the pump motor is shorted . And being that there seems to be resistance to flow of fluid in the lines i'm thinking that crap was pushed into valve assembly when po had the system redone and jammed things up when I started driving it ???.
OK How do you feel about bypassing the abs system ????
New parts
not available .I found a used sys for 300 but wheel sensors seem to be hard to find and are used so bypass may be the best .I have abs on my 4wd ranger and never cared for it when wet or slippery anyway
we won't be racing it . Another question is any legality involved in bypass if the car is sold ???????
I read a thread somewhere where the owner removed the brake lines from the ABS unit and blew out the passages with air. That solved his sticking caliper problem.
went back to work today so the vet won't being getting too much att for awhile . First day back since the hip replacement and I got beat up with pm work . wow , I think i'm too getting old for rooftop units anymore !!
when I get time I think my next step is to pull the lines off it and see what comes out of the valve body .I expect I'll end up pulling the whole thing out and put it on the bench where it can be looked at . then decide what the best course to take will be . Got all winter now the the nice weather is ending .

ok so after reading your thread and others I have came to realize that not all abs units fail open, 1988 corvette, my simpoms were left front brake dragging, after rebuiding a fairy new caliper I traced it back to the abs unit and on mine it is right behind the drivers seat under the hatch and under the storage tray, the left front brake line is on the drivers side front, the right is on the drivers side back.
so I loosened the left frot line at the abs and the caliper reliesed, I then took it out and proceeded to take something apart that they did not want you to, I found a broken spring under the chopp-er motor, their are three coils, one for the back and two for the front, one left and one right, thes little motors spin when energized, the broken spring at the bottom of the motor in question was broken, if you have any questions I would be happy to try answer them.

Thank You sir !!!!Someone that understands why I can't just pull the bulb and forget about it !!
I hope to try to get to on my days off next week .Looks that some of the unit is repairable
I'm going to pull the unit out and see what I can find on the bench .thank you for the pics gives me some insight to what I need to look for . FT

let me know if you have questions, if you look at my unit you will see a big allen head on the top, there is a steel cap pressed over it you will have to pry off. that holds the chopper motors on, many small parts pay attention when taking apart.

dont try it without a 12mm brake wrench, you will round off the fittings if you do not use a brake wrench.
