I know it hurts oxygen sensors, but whatelse is it bad for in my car? ( i don't have cats - no worry there). I'm trying to find a higher octane alternative that ISN'T $5-6 a gallon.
There are other issues with running Av-gas in your car. It's not designed for the temperatures we run. Not sure that it will hurt anything, just some driveability issues.
Also, most of the Av-Gas is low lead. Only about 0.1 grams/gallon if I remember right. Race gas, on the other hand, is up around 4.5 grams/gallon.
Do you want to run lead because of valve seat problems? Or do you just want more octane? There's a reason why lead was banned. Makes people , ya know.
Have you tried mixing pump gas and race gas? Try using some unleaded hi-octane. Start with 1 gallon per 10, and increase from there until you find the proper ratio.
I just need more octane. I'm getting spark retard with 11.55:1 compression in this heat. It was fine a few months ago. Yes, I probably need to be mixing some race gas in, but I was just trying to find a cheaper alternative than $5-6 a gallon for race gas.
Have you tried octane boosters? A recent Hemmings did an article on octane. They mentioned the top end NOS Octane booster was the only additive that had a measurable result.
I don't remember why, but they recommended against using AVGAS. I'll see if I can find the article. It was about 2-3 months ago in Hemmings Rod & Performance (or something like that).
Alright, thanks John! I've been trying to stay away from octane boosters since i've read how a lot of them are snake oil pretty much. I used to use the brand with the horse on it (or mustang/stallion) .. and it seemed to help a little bit according to my computer.
Pretty sure av gas will burn a hole in a piston. From what I am told it burns very dry if that makes sense. I did it to my 85 Mustang Gt several years ago. But it did run great and boy i like the smell of 100LL.
lol, yeah my rustang was stock. and i would think your set up should be able to handle it. The aircraft mechanic that worked on our aircraft, said it would not hurt it every now and then, but I got 20 gallons free a week and could not stop using it. I was addicted
