In defense of the tech, probably didn't 'advise' on the single mass replacement, as it is the only option in terms of new replacement flywheels. It just is what it is.
The curious aspect regarding the replacement is "if the single-mass was installed" was the "sprung disc" installed to finish the job. If it was an off the shelf package for the clutch we could almost assume that it was installed with an un-sprung disc. Like I mentioned there's way to many questions to be answered before just blaming the trans and mentioning rebuild or replacement.
Describe the sound more, is it a clunk sound or what?
I have a SM FW, and at idle, clutch out, if low idle 700 or less, it sounds terrible. I have been told by several mechanics, and other people I need a new this and that, and have to explain it is because of a SM FW etc and it has been that way for years and no issues. Raise the idle to 900 + and it goes away, I have heads cam so better for mine.
Mine will clunk in 6th if low rpms and under load, 1500 is fine though, and that is more like 65mph. You can feel it, I try not to let it do it, I think it is play in the rear drive line, and clunks back and forth when power is applied or removed.

You are very correct about questions to be answered. What we don't know is if the shop ordered the flywheel and clutch kit seperately, or ordered a complete kit, such as Carolina Clutch and Ecklers, and perhaps others sell as complete kits with a sprung disc. So really this could've gone either way.
Having done this this spring, with a lightweight Spec steel flywheel and the Carolina Clutch sprung disc, I can attest to some rattle when 'lugging' at low rpms. I also have a good amount of gear rattle at idle in neutral. It's just the nature of the beast. I really doubt that there is an issue with the transmission itself. This gear rattle is the very reason GM went with the dual mass in the first place.

Exactly. There are really two factors at work here. First is the lack of the spring in the dual mass flywheel, that absorbes the vibration of the sharper cut gears w/ in the trans. The second is the momentum of the rotating mass. At lower rpms the heavier mass carries the momentum reducing the vibration. But with less overall weight there is less momentum, thus requiring higher rpms to overcome stagnate inertia. The extra mass flywheels help this, yet, without the spring, the vibration is still present.
So, when starting from a stop, you need to raise the normal rpm of the motor more before releasing the clutch, or when accelerating in 6th gear, either accelerate more slowly, or downshift until you reach the desired speed.
