Being new to the C4 world, and before i start the winter maintenence tear down, are the brake calipers fixed, as in the C3s, or are they floating?

On my 96' the front ones are floating. There is a pin on the bottom with a "C" clip. Remove the clip, pull the pin, and grab the caliper at the bottom and rotate it up and out. There are some weird spring clips that stop them from flopping around and you should pay attention to how and where they are attached to the brake pads. They sell a kit with new pins, clips, and springs for around ten bucks. The rear are on bolt/pins that allow it to float in and out but that's it. You must remove both of these bolts and then the caliper comes off. It takes a socket and a wrench to remove these. They are actually a bolt going into a strange shaped pin with a hex shape top to stop it from rotating during removal. There is a special grease that is used on the pin end of these bolts that can withstand the high temperature swings the caliper/brakes goes through. You also have to remove a few other things to get them totally off. Here is a picture of the rear caliper shown from the top. I believe on some models you can remove only one bolt and rotate the caliper enough to replace the pads if that's all you are doing. I got these calipers from partsgeek.com for less then $50.00 plus core/exchange. They are remanufactured with steel sleeves and came with all new mounting hardware.

Thanks for the quick replies..I had the car up[ on a friends lift on Sunday, and the inner rotor surface don't look like the pads have scrapped the surface rust off, while the outer rotor surfaces do..so I'm figuring eith stuck / siezed pistons, or the calipers were floaters, they may be hung up on the pins..

You guys answered my question so thanks..
