Michelin Pilot Sports are the best. Coincidentally, they are the most expensive.
BFG make some real good tires. BFG is actually made by Michelin. They are not as expensive as the Michelins though. I will only put BFG or Michelins on my 'Vette.
Kuhmos are real good tires and are not expensive compared to others. I have a set of those (245/50/16s) on my S-10.
Sumitomo HTR Z @ $121 or the Sumitomo HTR Z II @ $130 in 275/40/17 sizes.
I put a pair of HTR Zs on my ZR-1 and they are much quiter than the GSCs I had on there before. The HTR Z IIs have a better treadwear rating than the HTR Z.

I needed a cheap tire so I could pass inspection and I bought the Kumho 712's, I have been impressed with them so far. They handle well and stick, not the top tire but worth a good look. When I bump up to the new rims and get the 315's I am getting the BFG KD's though.
The tire I like the best are the Firestone Firehawk SZ50EPs.
I currently have the Michelin Pilot Sports (Firestone does not make a 315/35/17) and it is too soon for me to tell about performance versus the Firestones. However, the Michelins are lots of $$$. :yesnod:
I've got Sumitomo's on my Z51 '86 and will never buy any other tire. They cut out alot of vibration the BFG's & GSC's gave me and are alot cheaper. Performance is about the same too if you ask me.
Mine is now wearing the BFG KDWS... little difference in tread (additional grooves) but big diff. in price. $625 installed. Quiet and pretty sticky. I haven't had alot to compare them with but I would buy them again.

Re: Best tires? (VERTMAN)
I'll throw my 2 cents into the ring...the best tires I've had by far are the Bridgestone SO-2 Polesitter's. They'd be about $375 US (not cheap) but worth every penny....neat tread design too...
I really like the BFG Comp T/A' for everyday driving. They get great traction for normal use & have great wear life. For the price you can't beat them. The Mich pilots are stickier, but seem to wear out really quick. Especially when you factor in the cost per tire  . That's my opinion anyway. That and $3.50 will but you a mocha latte. :yesnod:
This is a question you will get 100 opinions from 100 people.:)
I'm running Dunlop SP 8000 Sport tires right now and love them. I get about 25k miles out of a set. They'll pull 1.9 60' times, and hold well on an autcross also. I have confidence in the rain, and they are very quiet.
For a driver car, I always recommend Bridgestone Potenza RE-730's. Great tire at a great price. I ran these on my '92, and have them on my wife's '93. I run the Nitto 555's on the front of mine and they are also nice.
