Default C4 exhaust

when I purchased my 1995 c4 coupe it had stock exhaust to muffler with 50 series flowmasters and stock tips. today I stopped by my local muffler shop and discussed some options he showed me an aftermarket x pipe he could put in the place of the resonator I believe is in the center of the car so I agreed 150 cash parts and labor I think it is a little louder but it definitely has more low tone anyone ever done this yet? and if you want it louder from here do I go muffler delete with tips only or a 1 chamber flow with stock tips let me know what you think

I think that if you have no smog control to worry about a full chambered exhaust is the way to go. Very nice normal speed sound but when you WOT it, its like you have no exhaust restriction. Chambered is the best of both worlds.

I have smog here but it will pass smog with cats and pipes and a sniff test it is what I usually do stock manifolds cats and nothing else not sure what a full chambered exhaust is I thought the 50 series flow masters at the tail pipes have 3 chambers and my car is quiet wish was louder I have stock manifolds cats resonator removed and 5 series flows

Due to mine being an 85 smog test is not required. My preference is no mufflers at all. I enjoy the rumble but it is my weekend toy only.

My '93 has an x pipe and muffler eliminators. It sounds good, but it is loud when on the loud pedal. I went to it on my car to reduce drone, which it did. I'm looking for a set of original mufflers now, though.

Cheapest to do elims first, then add in glass pack, resonator, or chambered pieces as desired.

Pretty much have to pick YOUR sound level from trial/error.

I agree. I must have been through 6 different set ups so far on my car. I found two that I like.

Mine is an 85, first I had muffler eliminators, they sounded the best in my opinion for having a catalytic converter. When I put headers and a cam in my car it sounded really good. Then I beat out the catalytic converter, and now the other options that are opened sound REALLY good.

I had a stock exhaust with headers, cam, gutted cat and muffler eliminators. Best sound I have ever heard in my life. Problem was too much drone and too loud. People gave me funny looks because it was so loud.

Next was a full stainless steel true dual Dynomax Ultra Flo exhaust, included exhaust from the headers to the Dynomax Ultra Flo mufflers. Yuck, no way!

Put back the stock exhaust with the Dynomax Ultra Flo mufflers and now it sounds really really good. Still no cat, and it has a really, really, really aggressive old muscle car tone.

There were two set ups that I really liked, the straight pipes, and the stock exhaust with the Dynomax mufflers. I don't think they would have sounded as good without the cam and headers.

I use the mufflers because it is a nice volume.

I would on the other hand recommend a corsa cat back exhaust if you were going to do exhaust modifications on a stock car. I think that is the best sound you can get while staying fairly stock, and no drone, if you can afford it.

A chambered exhaust has no mufflers or resonators or anything at all. They are pipes that run from the front to the rear. These pipes are pinched or dimpled at many specific location throughout their entire length. Under normal driving these pinch points cause back pressure and reflect the sound waves back on themselves which make them cancel each other out. Under WOT the sound just travels straight down the center of the pipe and is only slightly restricted. It takes a considerable amount of work to get the wave cancelations just right and are different for every model car. They are quiet when cruzin around but open right up when you press the pedal. Chambered exhaust was a street legal factory option on some of the late 60's early 70's muscle cars. There is a guy in Indiana that makes complete stainless chambered systems for C4's. It's something like "Alan's Stainless Exhaust" or close to that. The first time I heard them was in my cousins brand new 69' Camaro Z28. They were the best sounding exhaust I've ever heard. Even up till now nothing beats them when they are designed right.
