Yeah, I had the same problem until I figured it out on the 2nd shock. Put the car on stands (or a lift if you have one) and then place a jack under the strut and jack it up a little. It'll relieve the pressure from the struts and will let you work on it easier.

Yes they are a pain...
I used vise grips to keep the shaft from turning. I beleive you can pick up a shock tool at any parts store as well. The vise grips always worked for me.. or I've just been lucky...

Didn't even waste my time trying to turn them off - just looking at them I could tell they were rusted in place. Used a nut cutter and they cracked in half with a couple of turns - problem solved and it didn't even scar the threads on the shaft.

I had to use a hack saw to cut the spindle off of mine. I drove a screw driver between the nut and the washer to open a gap and inserted the saw there. Good luck. :seeya
