Default Dumb thermostat question

I bought a new thermostat for the vette and it did not come with a gasket. There is an o-ring on the thermostat, is this o-ring the only seal? Or do I need a gasket as well?
Thanks,
Jim :flag

The o-ring should be placed and seated on the perimeter of the thermostat and that is all there is for gasketing.

Thanks Denney, I figured if it was required it would have come with the thermostat.

When you remove the t-stat housing you will see that the old t-stat resides in a "well" within the water pump housing. It may take a little priying on the old one to remove it (they tend to get stuck in there after a while). If prying on it, be very careful not to gouge or mark the aluminum on the mating surface. I have never had a problem with leaking after a t-stat swap so it must be a pretty good design.

Another dumb question, is the new t-stat made for an LT1/4? It's different than the t-stats made for the classic Chevy small block. I've never seen an LT1/4 t-stat at my local parts stores. OTOH, every LT1/4 t-stat I've purchased has the o-ring already in place.

I bought the Robert Shaw t-stat for my LT1 at AutoZone, it was the heavy duty "lifetime" warranty as well. The o-ring gasket was also purchased there (from the parts counter). The thermostat I bought did not seem significantly different from any other t-stat I have bought for other vehicles. Although, I will admit, that when I pulled the one that was in the car they physically looked different. The Robert Shaw worked fine though.

The LT1 thermostat is different. I got this info on vette thermostats directly from someone at Stant the OEM supplier to GM.

86-91 Corvette 5.7L VIN 8
Stant 13359
Valve diameter - 1.00"
Min. stroke @ full open - .310

90-95 Corvette 5.7L VIN J
Stant 14068
Valve diameter - 1.12"
Min. stroke @ full open - .320

92-96 Corvette 5.7L VIN P
Stant 14218
Valve diameter - 1.640"
Min. stroke @ full open - .320

Notice the LT1 valve diameter is 60% greater than that of the L98 and almost 50% bigger than that of the LT5.
