Hello all,
I have a 1990 corvette L98 TPI auto dana 36 rear end. The car is not stock its a 355, cam, ported plenum, edelbrock high flow runners and intake, 24 pound injectors, some head and valve work, long tube headers, no CATs, true duals and CAT back exhaust. As far as I know the car has the stock 2:59 gears. I want to change them. I have been researching and I have read that the 3:07 is best for a mostly stock car. With my mods do you feel I can go as low as maybe 3:45's or should I stay at the 3:07's. Thanks for all opinions.
My instructor has a 1991 auto with 3.54s I believe. I think the highest you can go is like 3.73 with a Dana 36. I have 3.75s in my Dana 44. I would recommend spending your money elsewhere, it was $600 and yes it might take a few tenths off the 1/4, but as I've been told with the TPI still being on the engine, it may hurt your times because it will put you out of your power range. I would recommend spending it on something else, it was $600 plus $200 to install at a $50/hr labor rate, after I had removed the rear myself.
You're also going to need drive and driven gears or a speedometer calibrator, so unless you are going to do it yourself, it can get a bit pricey. For the money you are going to spend on parts and having someone else install them, I would recommend you just go with like a miniram or something instead.
Thanks for the reply, I did read that the 3:07 was best to keep with the power range of the engine unless you have some good mods that allow your car to acheive higher RPM's.
You have a 2 series carrier and 3:07's have a 3 series carrier. I have a 1990 Vert and went from 2:73 to 3:54's several years back using the 2 series carrier....thicker ring gear. I find the 3:54's not as radical as I thought it would be and was happy with the results. They pull nice and not radical. Im over 65 and find it just right. One thing though; the VSS cannot be bought new and you will have to find one out of a 3:07 tranny. The 2:59 and 2:73 use a 35-39T VSS (stamped on the VSS) and the 3:07 VSS is stamped with a 40-45T. You will need a 41T drive and a 43T driven gear to accurately get your speedo right.
Thanks for the replies, I have priced the gears for parts and labor and its very high!!!! Around 1300 bucks, for a little more I can get a nice set of heads. What would give the car a bigger bang a nice set of gears or a nice set of heads?
