The casting numbers are on the rear of the block near where the bellhousing bolts up. The assembly stamp is on the pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head. IE: many casting number were the same, but the assembly stamp defines application.

Vettoz,
First, only Corvette's and Camaro's had vin sequence stamped in the block.
That engine assembly breaks down as the following.
T0427HK
T=Tonawanda
04=April
27=Day of month
HK=65/327/MT/AC/Special high performance engine 365 HP
The vin should confirm with car, and as it was produced that year. Blocks casting date is maybe 6 months prior to assembly date.

It was a clarifying statement, because suffix HK was used in other vehicles. With the VIN it made it Corvette. Sorry if it confused you.

The pic was simply to help the OP locate the number.
Nowhere did I imply it had anything to do with a Vette

Is there an easier way to identify aluminum heads? For example the bolt location of the valve cover?

A magnet will discriminate between iron and aluminum heads.

There are a couple different block casting numbers. Those above seem to be the numbers stamped onto a machined pad for ID purposes.
There is another block casting number for the block itself. For a '95 or '96 LT1 or LT4 it is 10125327 and is cast into the block. On the sides of the block they cast the number 327 (last digits for the block casting number) in large lettering near the motor mounts. It may be the same number for other years too, but I am sure of it on the '95 & '96.
Because of the 327 markings I got a better deal on my LT4. The owner's mechanic told him it was the wrong motor. The seller even told me that it wasn't the big motor it was a smaller replacement.
