Default Engine pulling time!

I bought a rat nest in an 85 as I stated in my intro thread.

Finally got around to pulling the engine. I had to pull the heads in the car because there was still too much cactus and debris which prevented access to the transmission to engine bolts. It's just about ready to come out.

Looks like she has a broken crankshaft. I can move the front 6 pistons a little in their cylinders before the rear two move.

That's funny stuff. I'd be curious to see if the crank is bad. Don't hear about them failing too often. Keep us updated.

Sure enough, broken crankshaft. This is only the second one I have ever seen. The first was in my 86 Cherokee which had the 2.8 Chevy 60 degree V6.

I think this engine has been rebuilt before - unless TRW pistons are stock.

What would cause this? Do you think 7 or 8 hydrolocked?

I don't see any evidence of water ingestion or fuel injectors stuck on. I'd like to know the root cause, but I don't think I ever will.

Well... Looks like it's time for a crate engine. I don't like the wear on this main journal. The main cap is worse. Jegs has a 260 horse free shipping no tax longblock deal for $1530.

Anyone see any issues using THIS ENGINE?

Thrust bearing all copper wow. What did the harmonic balancer look like? Guessing a GM crate would be somewhat reliable.

Balancer isn't separated, and was still on the crank plenty tight. No significant oil seal wear groove. Seems good.

If all you can afford is the base GM Target engine it will operate well. The ZZ4 would be my choice that will work with stock programming. Can be tuned (I hate this word) but will work.

Well for beginners, it has a flat tappet cam; and with the removal of zinc and phosphorous from engine oils for emissions reasons, lobe failure is always a concern. There are aftermarket lifters that are designed to provide extra oil to the lifter / cam interface...so that might be an option.

But...why not a 86 or later block with a factory hydraulic roller cam? sure it has a one piece rear seal style crank shaft that will require a newer style flexplate or flywheel, but it also has a better rear seal and better one piece pan gasket.

I believe rollers/one piece rear seal, started in 87, not 86. Alum, heads started mid 86.
