From what I've seen there are a lot of different codes for the various years and the two ratios. The codes are on the bottom of the gear box on a metal cap. It's on the right at the top of this picture:
Need to find one to get rebuilt. cant find the identification letter on mine need help. It is a 1986 vert anyone know the exact rack?
Thanks
You need to be cautious of a buy of a used to use as your core to be rebuilt. You need to confirm the length of the rack "tip of RH inner tie rod to tip of LH inner tie rod. That dimension would indicate if it were for an early chassis or a latter chassis. Sending an incorrect to start with would get you an incorrect back.
A late rack with just inner tie rods attached I measured at 50", "vetteoz" measured his '89 at 50 5/8" and another poster mentioned his '84 measured 48". You could use these as a guide and along with the 2 letter code from the end cap confirm likely the rack identification. With a rack on the ground it's very easy to confirm the "lock to lock" turn counts. 2 turn is generally felt to be the desired and is frequently referred to as a Z51.
'84 - '87 length less outer tie rods 48" approx (I have never measured first hand)
