Hello, first posting . I noticed in my service and owner manuals call for AC PF51 . The AC book @ AZone calls for PF52 and is currently installed on car . I have had no problems with #52 but was wondering whats the diff. Also does anybody use the high $ filters from K+N or Mobil 1 are they that much better Thanks for any info. :seeya
one of the filters has a check valve to prevent oil drainback when the engine is shut off. i think the PF51 is no longer made because it was the one without the anti drain back valve. filter that mount straight up and down,like a chevy V-8 engine do not drain out but using a filter with the anti drainback valve will cause no problems. i found this out years ago on the 151 iron duke that chevy installed in some cars,the PF51 would empty out and when you started the engine you would hear bearing rap till the filter filled up and allowed full oil pressure. :chevy
I used the PF52 but have switched to the Delco Gold (Ultraguard)..it's a bit pricier..9.95 vs 2.99 but for 7 bucks more I just feel better..I get em' at Pep Boys..BTW welcome to the forum...
Why worry about the anti drainback? The filter is not mounted sideways, so oil stays in the filter by gravity.
I don't know why, but it makes a difference. My pickup (with the same vertical filter orientation) would clatter pretty bad on startup occasionally with the pf51, but never with the pf52. I think it prevents the oil in the galleries from draining back into the pan through the filter.
The 52 was introduced at first for V-6 engines because of being mounted at an angle. They added the anti drain back valve. That's what made the 51 into a 52. I think all filters should have them.
