it was a new optical ignition system that GM put on the LT1 vette, as a replacement for the standard HEI distributor

started in 1992, improved in '95. The '95-'96 had a vacuum line running to it to remove any moisture that would get in there.
It's really a neat piece of equipment, just expensive as hell and a pain to replace.
