Default 95 Gas Tank Refresh

I'm in the process of replacing my fuel tank due to rust and a rusted out bolt on the fuel sender. Almost there...do I need to remove my exhaust as the FSM suggests? Also, should I coat the exterior of the new tank with some type of protectant? Any other advice?

BTW, thanks to the tail light and license plate openings the bolts were all surprisingly reachable, but what a PITA! I can only imagine how difficult putting everything back together will be.

Thanks!
Jerome

If you do not care about how it looks...you can use 3M rubberized undercoating in can.

Spray and let dry.

Yup..

As mine aged, I started to cover the scraped spots on the underside with the spray can undercoat...its actually pretty good for sealing and even adds a bit of sound deadening.

Gas tank could use a layer...and because its fairly well hidden by the spare tire carrier, it does not show anyway

The exhaust.....probably no way to get around that. IIWM, I'd find a good spot at the rear Y to sawsall the rear Y off that can easily be rewelded or clamped together with a splice from the parts store.. You should not have to drop the whole mess...THATS a lot of hassle.

All,

Thanks, I'll paint the tank with some type of undercoating. I started loosening/PB blasting some of my exhaust bolts just in case I have to drop it....what a pain! Yah, I'll research cutting it at the Y versus removing all the bolts and system at the cats. I did remove the first spring bolts for the exhaust and I'm hoping I'll get enough clearance/play to remove the tank without having to totally drop the exhaust. Bolts to the cats are rusted good down there and I just hate to break one. We'll see...

You do not have to lower the impact bar that much to get it to allow you to remove the gas tank...if that is what you are planning on doing. I have done many and I do not separate the exhaust at all.

DUB, awesome!!! That's the plan, remove/replace the gas tank without having to drop the exhaust. Thanks for letting me know, I'll give it a shot. Jerome

Well, as u mentioned...no need to drop the exhaust. Also, the undercoating worked out great. Interesting, the aftermarket tank doesn't come with the bladder and this yellow guide for the fuel sender.

Jerome,

Where'd you get your tank? I have to do this on one of my 94's for this same reasons.

Good job!

Thanks, the hardest part was getting the rear fascia out. Got it on EBay for $180, it came with the fuel sender gasket and screws too. Name: image-2099473251.jpg
