Default Computers not available?

I listened to part of a presentation at Corvettes at Carslisle where the presenter said computers for C4s are no longer available from GM, and rebuilt ones don't "talk" to the other one in the car. He mentioned something about how this resulted in the dash display not working or being able to be fixed. My display, '96 convertible, is now blinking out at times and I'm wondering if I am in this boat.

It sounds like your cluster needs to be rebuilt. Your symptom is a typical one and unrelated to the ECM.

Thanks for the info. Is the guy at Carlisle correct that when our computers, ECM?, expire we have a 3000 pound paperweight?

I have seen some rebuilt ECMs but don't know about whether they communicate with the BCM or not. From browsing the forum I have noticed that it seems like the 90-93 units have more issues than the 94-96 ones, but that is just my perception - not fact based at all.

It sounds like your problem is in your cluster. Sometimes the connecting harness needs to be cleaned and the plug needs to be firmly reseated.

Sounds like BS to me. What fix was he selling? By the way, ECMs rebuilt by AC Delco are readily available for your year.

Default Instrument Cluster LCD dropping out

This thread goes through repairing cracked solder joints in the cluster that causes intermittent operation.

The display in my 1994 was dim and then gone completely. I replaced the display with this

and also the 5 bulbs behind it and all is fine now.

Thanks for your thoughts folks. I wish I could remember the presenter at Carlisle, but we wasn't selling anything. Just runs a shop.

The guy was obviously using the "scare tactic" to sell or promote a product.

Its BS.

Don't worry.

330,000 C4s built...there is a HUGE aftermarket for all parts and always will be.
