anybody know anything about say a '94 Lumina 3.1 on supposedly having to relearn the ignition on the computer??? as in I changed an engine on one of those POS cars, and the ignition timing was all screwed up....way too much advance, engine bucked starter and would not start....
told the guy to take to dealership....280 bux later they relearned the ignition...
what's that mean, exactly....
I assume any direct fire igniiton system is that way these days....
ECM's may learn ignition depending on the knock sensor output. don't know for sure about the 3100. this type of learning is to allow the ignition timing to adapt to lower octane fuel. HOWEVER, this type of learning RETARDS spark, which may still make your engine run like crap. anyway, if (big IF) this "octane learning" is kicking in, it could be a whole lotta false knock constantly going on - octane learning is fairly slow.
the only other learning the ECM does that i know of is idle and closed loop fuel stuff (BLM).
"relearning" i am guessing is just resetting the non-volatile RAM on the computer, which is a 5-minute job with the tech 2, but book rate i guess is another story...
