How do you remove the valve covers on an 85, need to replace the gaskets. It looks like the right side is blocked by other parts. Do I have to remove anything else first?
doing that same job next week, found a video from gas and gears garage, all you have to do is remove the windshiled washer motor cover looks easy on video, ill let you know in a week, or vica versa

That's what looks like is in the way, I thought that was the windshield wiper motor though, not so easy to remove I think. Where did you find the video?
I usually remove the AIR pump. A few bolts and that's it.
I also do this. I tried the wiper cover, but with the runners in place it was tighter than I wanted to deal with.
The air pump has 3 bolts and one nut holding it on the car. Remove the drive belt, loosen the 10mm bolt on top of the alternator, and I believe it is a 15mm nut and 2 bolts under the air pump. You will also have to loosen a hose clamp and disconnect an air hose, but all of this goes pretty fast once you know where the bolts are.
That covers the driver's side.
On the passenger side on my 86' I have to remove the sigle bolt that holds the A/C lines to the A/C compressor (my A/C does not work and was evacuated of refridgerant years ago. After that I have to cut the crimp ring for the EGR tube as I cannot access the lower torx bolt on the EGR tube-to-intake maniflod plate without the rest of the tube being free. Reinstalling the crimp ring requires a new crimp ring and a long set of heavy dike/cutters to squeeze the ring.
wow! that L98 is a mess, and that's after the "mechanic" said he's cleaned it up - love the puddle of rusty coolant laying on the intake - if that was my car, I'd be in a state of depression!!!

All you have to do is eliminate ALL the A.I.R. pump, tubing and solenoids, then eliminate ALL the EGR tubing and then you dont have to remove anything to get the covers off!
If you dont want to do all that, loosen the AIR pump, alternator and maybe the WW cover for the left. Remove the EGR tube and loosen the AC bracketry for the right side. There are various vac tubes and heater hoses on both sides as well.
Good luck!
You can look at my avatar and see how much room I have on the left side.

As a new Corvette owner, but long-time fan and admirer, the condition of that engine is (I don't know how else to say it) disgraceful. Sorry, but a Corvette ... ANY Corvette ... deserves to be much better taken care of.

I agree. However, I have watched his videos and in one he stated that he bought the car from a neighbor who didnt take care of it.
