Charging system - battery, alternator, battery cables. How old is battery? Do you keep it charged with a trickle charger? Check battery connections and clean.

Loose cables, bad battery or battery needs to be charged.

The most common occurrence is when it flashes SYS and then it goes away. It will cycle like that go back the normal and then return to SYS. The system is sensitive to a battery being in good shape and even though it is charged, you can still get a cycling SYS if the battery is week, old or not in good shape. If that’s the case, a new battery is the answer.

But the higher level more correct technical answer to SYS is that the CCM might have a code in module 1 and that it the way it is displayed. The on board diagnostics (or Tech 1 or Tech 2) will show you the code if there is one. The system for the 96 is OBD2 but that is for the PCM module 4. I believe the codes for module 1 are the same for 94-96.

It may be worthwhile to check your post terminals on the cables. These can strip out pretty easily, corrode and what not. They're very cheap and easy to replace, if needed.

The flashing SYS indicates that your dash computer has detected an error condition and stored a record of it. Any number of things affecting the sensor inputs to the computer could result in an error code being stored, not just battery-related (in fact, that's never been the cause for me).

The instructions on the link below must be followed to get your car to tell you which error code, in particular, it is reporting. Only then can you know what it's talking about and what, if anything, you need to do to make it happy.
