Default 1984 c4 issues. Pls help.

Hi I have a 1984 corvette c4 4+3 manual transmission. Sometimes when the engine is hot and I try to start it it does not even crank. It seems like a sensor is cutting out the signal to the starter. What do you think might be the problem? Also sometimes it has bad idling (stays at high revs without stepping on gas). Today while engine braking on second gear the shifter started slipping out and going into neutral by itself. I appreciate a lot if you can help me.

For starter issues, check the neutral-safty/clutch-depressed switch (could be loose or not making contact), battery cable connections, and dead/weak battery s/b first (electrolite level if not a sealed unit). Then the main engine block battery ground, next check the voltage on the hot terminal for 12+ volts on the starter solenoid, if 12+ volts next, short the terminal across the starter solenoid (carefully please) and see if the starter cranks (you may need a helper to depress the clutch for this). Intermittent starting is often caused by a weak solenoid or broken/missing teeth on the flywheel. (hope it's just electrical). For high idle check for vacuum hose leaks. For more complicated issues get the FSM and look at the troubleshooting checklists. I have an AT so maybe someone else can chime in on the Doug-Nash issue although I'd guess a badly worn clutch.

To add to what fredd1 said, the alarm is also involved. It disables the starter. I have heard that you have to make sure the door lock is vertical when you unlock the door or the alarm might be turned off completely.

The trans popping out of gear on deceleration can be caused by a bad synchro. This gets progressively worse over time and if this is your problem the next symptom will be a slight grind as it goes into gear. Then it becomes a BIG grind as it goes into gear and then it becomes impossible to get it into that gear.

To tell the truth it's already making a big grind sometimes on first gear.
Thanks for the help.

Default 4+3 slipping out of gear ez fix

My 86 4+3 started slipping out of gear and making noise with the clutch released in neutral. The fluid level was low. Somewhat challenging to fill but a short piece of rubber hose on the tip of a normal quart bottle does the trick. Grinding going into first can happen if you try to go in at too high a speed and can scatter the cluth disk. If it's too fast to drive in that gear then don't put it in prematurely. Also on mine I had grinding issues due to bad fluid in the slave cylinder. Water contamination over time. Soak out the old with a rag or use a turkey baster to suck out the old fluid. Fill with new brake fluid and bleed the old fluid out of the system. Immediate fix for mine. I used 75w90 full synthetic Mobil 1 gear oil in the gearbox and wildwood high temp brake fluid in the slave cylinder. Also clean out any crud in the reservoir if there is any. The system is almost 30 years old so there probably is

One symptom of a failing ignition control module.
