Just about ready to have my neighbor who is a gm mechanic do the work because I am getting to old and don't have a good shop or physically able to do it. He says it easier to pull engine and transmission because it easier to mate them together on a manual transmission. I know my dad and I on several farm pickups replaced engines in our dirt floor in the pole barn and was very frustrating trying to align them up but eventually get them back together. Is thi the best way to go? Also, the new engine is complete including the wiring harness. He says he will have to pull the dash to hook up the several plugs and looks like a vacuum line that comes through the firewall, any thoughts on that?
I personally don't pull the tranny if I'm not working on it. That's just me. The vacuum line is probably the fresh air line for the opti spark. I can't think of any reason to pull the dash. Good luck...

It is generally considered easier to remove and instal the C4 engine and transmission together however different mechanics will have different opinions.
Normally when fitting replacement engines and assuming the same fuel injection system the existing wiring loom gets reused on the new engine. Therefore no need to get behind the dash?
The vacuum line you are referring to that goes through the firewall will be to supply vacuum to your air con unit. It is used to operate the directional doors. You should just need to reconnect this to how it was before disconnecting it.
The worst thing about pulling the motor w/o the tranny is getting to the top bellhousing bolts. I had to raise the engine, remove the motor mounts, lower the engine and then you have enough room to get to the BH bolts. Also the exhaust is really difficult to get to, there are two bolts that mount the cats to the BH, takes patience to get it all out. Good luck.
