Figured I'd ask a few questions since I got a night too sleep on a solution. Is it a common problem for the TPI plenum extension/Distributor cover too hit or rub the hood? I haven't had it running since I notice, maybe a sign of bad motor mounts?
Looks like I'm gonna have too cut the hood some or take a chance of dropping the hood and taking out my external coil dust cover. Any metal support bracing round there?

Please disregard the green circles in the pic, but you can see my '85's rubbed...
What is that gray thing attached to the top of your distributor cap? It looks like you have a remote coil.
My guess is that the gray thing is sticking up too high and raising the plenum extension up enough to hit the hood. You could cut off the top part from the groove upwards. That appears to be similar to the old spark plug wire retainer (I just threw mine away because I haven't had a spark plug wire set where the boots had that thing on top)
It's an external coil and I have not shut the hood since it's install and do not plan on reinstalling the cover. I was doing a tune-up and deleting some junk on my new car and noticed the marks on the hood. Looks like I'll have too cut the hood.
My '87 has the same marks from the distributor cover. The plug wires I have (Taylor 8mm) fit easily under the stock cover.
That boot for the external coil wire certainly looks very tall and the OEM cover can't be used with it. Given that the coil wire cover is rubber, it may flatten somewhat with the hood closed. You may have to cut the hood if the back of the hood doesn't touch the hood seal. In the pic, the boots looks like it sits higher than the seal.
The remote coil set up can't work with the cover, it's way to tall. Either loose the remote coil and go with an internal coil like MSD or Pertronixs or don't use the cover and hope the hood is not hitting the coil boot. I run a MSD extreme cap with a Pertronix coil and ignition module and it works just fine.
I had no intention of reinstalling the cover, but it is good to know that part is available if I change my mind some day. Also I may attempt too trim mine, but looks are low priority atm. The car needs a lot maintenance and upgrades if I want too race it soon.
