Default Mysterious surge

About 1 out of 30 times that I start the car it surges back and forth from approx 500 rmp to 1200 rpm. After turning the car off and on several times it stops.

Someone suggested that it's because something was wet in the engine but it's been 90-100 and up (degrees) here and no rain.

I have every faith that one of you have the answer! :D

I'm beginning to think it has something to do with being a Vette. A lot of people have this problem including me. It will start out around 1100 and gradually go down to (pic a number) then surge back up to 1100. It might come back down or it might not. I put a new MAF on last night and will do more testing today if it doesn't die on me.

It just started happening. I've had the vehicle 2 years and never had this issue before.
Please keep me posted as to if the MAF helped..

My neighbor works at a dealership so I think I will have him to check out the IAC and TPS to make sure that is all straight. I'll keep posting. :seeya

Mine had an 'idle surge' too until I took the Idle Air Controller (IAC) out and cleaned it up.

Respond back if you need this remove and clean procedure...

After I cleaned it and reset the idle to .54V and WOT to 4.65 volts, it still didn't seem right, so I set the idle to the 'performance' setting of .65 volts.

I have the same kind of surge, but would like to explain myself more in detail. When in park or neutral it will go from 800 to 900 or so but nothing really to worry about. Ocasionally when in drive and stopping at a stoplight , once at full stop, it will surge as if the engine wants to die and then goes up to about 900 or so. The size of the surge isn''t very big but it is sudden and does shake the car. I have all my sesnors set right. All I haven't done is really taken my IAC out and cleaned it thoroughly. I would guess if it was dirty I should be getting surges all the time and not only in drive when coming from a higher rpm at, for example a stoplight. What could this be?

I have had the EXACT same thing happen time to time on my vette. Drives me a little crazy since I have replaced the O2, IAC, TPS, and MAF sensors since I have had the car... New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter, injector service, etc also. The computer isn't helping any- whatever is happening isn't causing a sensor to read out of it's range or flag SES for help in diagnosis.

I have an auto... How about all of you? Maybe this only effects 700R4 owners only. That would be helpful to figure it out.

I have a stock 87, auto, mine started to surge like you describe, it would only do it in neutral after it would warm up a bit. After spending many hours searching for the cause I decided to look for an intake leak, I found all of the inlet plenum bolts on all of the intake runners to be loose, the bolts on the throttle body were also loose. I went around the entire top end tightening all the bolts and checking for leaks when I finished. The surging went away and never returned, I guess that was the problem, it's been 6 months and no surging.
